The Heart of Your Home
The kitchen is often where more than just cooking and eating happens. It's where conversation begins and decisions are made, usually over a cup of coffee, a glass of wine, or a cold drink. Life happens in this space, and it is because of this that how your kitchen looks and feels matters.
I came across an article in Woodshop News a few weeks ago that shared that White is still the most popular color for kitchen cabinets. It further said that Black and Dark Gray are in hot pursuit. Of late, the alternative to offset the white cabinets has been to paint or stain an island in dark green, blue, gray, or black. For years, matte black or oiled bronze hardware was the standard. Now gold and gaudy are the trend, along with chrome.
To confuse our sense of space even further, upper cabinets have been disappearing. Larger drawers and floating shelves have been the more common trend. Carrera Marble has been the preferred stone for countertops, yet because of decades of quarrying, it's becoming much harder to find. Now, other white marble and even granite are becoming more popular.
The list of trendy changes to design and style in kitchens could go on for pages here, but the real reason that I wanted to write this post was to address all of the homeowners who have outdated or functionally obsolete kitchens.
Thinking of remodeling Your Kitchen?
If you have wanted to update or remodel the kitchen, before you begin to gather estimates and build a dream board of all the colors and features you want to add, stop and ask yourself, what is the time frame you plan to remain in the house? The idea here is that if you will likely move in a year or two, pay careful attention to the design and functionality. It will be a much better investment in both time and money to stay away from those custom colors and textures that you might like but the masses will not.
For instance, the ever-popular and enduring Shaker cabinet doors and drawers are seeing a rebirth. Two out of three cabinet styles going into kitchen remodels are a Shaker style. Why? Because it is a classic look and is well-liked by the masses. Add to this light stone or marble backsplashes, slab stone counters, and stone cladding along with the "must have" pull-out recycle/trash bins, and you have your can't-miss kitchen remodel outline.
So there you have it. It's a straightforward plan with a straightforward forward style. And as I have shared here, keep the style simple and classic. For most of you, stay in the "middle of the road" with color and overall costs, especially if a move is in the near future. And if that is the case, consult with a trusted Realtor who understands the current trend in the market and can assist you in merchandising your property for success.
