Gateway to the Painted Hills

Prineville, Oregon

Today, the oldest city in Central Oregon has plenty to showcase what you love about the area: high-quality food crafted with care, cutting-edge craft beers, and plenty of outdoor recreation. But the city of 10,000 also makes its mark as the gateway to the Painted Hills, as a hotbed of year-round angling opportunities, a fun outpost with robust nightlife, and as a premier golf destination.

That said, Prineville has enjoyed more of a balanced market and thus a more level playing field for both sellers and buyers. Compared with some of the other areas in Central Oregon, Prineville remains as one of the more “affordable” areas to be considered.

Discover Life in Prineville, Oregon

Named for the first merchant back in 1877, Barney Prine, Prineville is the county seat for Crook County. Nestled at the eastern edge of Central Oregon, and in the heart of the Crooked River Caldera, Prineville has a lot in common with the rest of the region—but has consistently blazed its own trail since being founded in 1870.

Prineville has many hidden gems to consider. Chimney Rock is a stunning basalt rock formation located within the picturesque Crooked River Canyon near the town of Prineville.

A hiking trail begins on the canyon floor and winds its way up to the rock formation, providing several great opportunities to photograph the unique rock formation and the wild and scenic river below.

The Chimney Rock segment of the Lower Crooked Wild and Scenic River is popular for all kinds of recreation including incredible fishing, camping, hiking, photography, and scenic views.

Meadows Lake Golf Course is one of Oregon’s 7 Golf Gems, meanders past rock-rimmed buttes and green meadows, punctuated with 10 evaporation ponds that double as water hazards. Plentiful water means premium conditioning, even with all that Central Oregon sun.

There is also Lookout Mountain, “easily one of the best-sustained downhill trails in Central Oregon.” That alone should be enough to get you excited about the area.

But wait – there’s more! Lookout Mountain is also the highest point in the Ochoco Mountains, at 6,918 feet. And to give you an idea of what that looks like, well, there’s the name, and the rewarding views meeting you on the surrounding hikes.

On a clear day, from the summit, you can see the Cascades to the west, the Strawberries to the east, and the Ochocos all around and below you.

The Lower 66 trail system, perched right above Prineville on the edge of town, fits the bill. Whether you live there or are just visiting, it’s a great way to get in a little fun.

Prineville is home to Les Schwab Tires, one of the largest tire distribution companies serving 6 states in the Pacific Northwest. Facebook built a Green Data Center a few years ago on 160 acres, and Apple too has made a significant investment in the area.

The system offers five trail options, from easy to moderate to black-diamond – all in one concentrated dose of roughly 4 miles total with all options. You can ride any of the sections in either direction.
